The Nordic Effect
Paradigm ( Norway) and Views on Clay (Finland) 27 March 2013 – 15 May 2013
2013 marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Kilkenny Design Workshops (KDW), a visionary state-sponsored design agency that emerged in response to the 1961 Scandinavian Report on Irish design. In exploring the legacy of the iconic KDW, the National Craft Gallery is pleased to present two contemporary Nordic exhibitions:
Paradigm
Ulla-Mari Brantenberg | Tulla Elieson | Linnéa and David Calder | Pal Vigeland
Paradigm is an exhibition of contemporary Norwegian craft commissioned by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Norwegian Association for Arts and Crafts, and curated by Lars Sture. The exhibition, put together through a careful process of dialogue and selection, demonstrates the exhibitors’ abilities to combine craft traditions with new concepts, thereby creating evolving philosophical, theoretical or material frameworks that emphasise progression and experimentation. The artists included cross a range of disciplines and generations, but are linked by their abilities to synthesize tradition with innovation. The exhibition emphasises the evolution of craft as a discipline that combines both head and hand and where the exhibition title refers to the abstraction in the relation between the audience and the art object, the audience and the maker. Paradigm offers an opportunity to explore the thinking processes of the artists involved, and a wider introduction to contemporary Norwegian craft.
Curated by Lars Sture
Presented in association with Norwegian Crafts and the Norwegian Embassy in Dublin.

Design Migration 10+
The Design Migration Association was formed by a group of emerging designers in Finland in 2003 as a means of connecting designers with producers and retailers through innovative exhibitions of products and prototypes. The exhibition Views of Clay was part of the Helsinki World Design Capital Program and was shown in the Design Museum Helsinki in 2012. The concept of the exhibition involved gathering a group of designers, some of whom worked with clay as their medium, some of whom did not, and inviting them to articulate their ideas about the material in whatever way they chose. For some, this was an opportunity for creative expression, for others it was a chance to investigate their design process in a new medium. Many brought their understanding of other processes and materials to bear, resulting in new and innovative ways of working with clay. Views on Clay gives us an opportunity to look again at a familiar material, and gives us a taste of contemporary Finnish design.
Presented in collaboration with the Finnish Embassy in Ireland.
The exhibitions will be complemented by a seminar on Friday 5th April - 'The Nordic Effect; Crafting Models for Success'
