The Big Draw at National Design & Craft Gallery
Each year to celebrate National Drawing Day, we invite people of all ages to experience lots of FREE creative family fun and inventive artistry inspired by our exibitions programme. For National Drawing Day 2020 our activities were inspiried by the makers work on dispaly in our current ‘Generation’ exhibition. If you could not join us on the day, then not to worry for we have taken 'The Big Draw' virtual. This means that throughout the year you are can use our Big Draw webpage as rescouce to engage with our wide range of virtual national drawing day workshops and activities. We have uploaded our recorded live workshops and conversations with Award winning illustrator Kim Sharkey, NDCG Junior Crafts Club Volunteers and goldsmith Marie Wilgaard Kelly. For more family fun, we recommend a selection of online workshops created by our education panel members available below. Families will be encouraged to use readily available materials found at home.

Accordion Book Making with Mono Print
Join multi-media artist and award winning illustrator Kim Sharkey for her ‘Accordion Book Making with Mono Print’ Zoom workshop. Children will learn how to create their own accordion books using cardboard and Paper. Kim guides children in the making process, demonstrating each stage to create a book with beautifully illustrated mono printed scenes. This workshop is inspired by the work of ‘Generation’ exhibiter ceramist Mark Campden and his dad Edgar’s use of visual notebooks. Materials are: A4 Sheet of paper or hard card + some harder card (old birthday card or cereal box), ruler, pencil, scissors, glue-stick, oil pastel, or alternatives such as crayon or coloured drawing pencils, Vaseline (alternatively us thick moisturising cream or liquid soap). In Conversation with NDCG Junior Crafts Club Volunteers Join Emma Wilgaard Kelly, 9 years and her mum Marie Wilgaard Kelly for a recorded conversation with audience members as they discuss and share their family drawings from three generations of their family. Suitable for families of all ages. Recorded interview coming soon!
Technical Drawing with Goldsmith Marie Wilgaard Kelly
Explore how a technical drawing feeds into the making process of a hollow form ring with Goldsmith Marie Wilgaard Kelly in a ‘Technical Drawing’ recorded zoom workshop. Marie will gives a step by step guide on how to create a technical drawing, demonstrating each stage before showcasing her hand made ring. This workshop is suitable for both secondary school students and jewellery makers. Participants will gain a deeper understanding on how to create technical drawings of 3 dimensional objects. Materials are: pencil, compass, T-square, set square, paper, drawing board, rubber. Suitable for Teens/Adults. Click here
Creative Book Competition!
To celebrate National Drawing Day @NDCGallery with multi-media artist @KimSharkey host a crafted and illustrated bookmaking competition!We invite children and teens to record their own experience of this historic time in a creative book.
For inspiration check out Kim’s workshop Accordion Book Making with Mono Print. Consideration will be given to illustrated narrative and inventiveness of crafted book. Categories 6-12 years & 13-18 years, with one winner from each group. Prizes includes a singed copy of #MórAgusMuilc illustrated by Kim and €40 voucher for @EvansArtsSupplies
