MASTERCLASS: Twisted Layers - Translating Origami Techniques in Fabric

Thurs 22nd January, 2pm-6.30pm | €25

With designers Natalie B Coleman & Ana Faye

As part of the Second Skin education programme National Craft Gallery are delighted to offer a masterclass in contemporary fashion design focusing on innovative pattern-drafting and 3d forming fabrics. Aimed at fashion and textile designers, students and fabric / fashion enthusiasts this contemporary cutting Masterclass will explore innovative appropriations of origami techniques in fabric styling and constructing form.

Award winning Irish fashion designers Ana Faye and Natalie Coleman will lead this intensive workshop titled Twisted Layers, in which they will share innovative techniques based on translating Origami concepts into fabric. The workshop will focus on demonstrating reconstructing basic flat bodice blocks into 3 dimensional stylised shapes through cut and draping techniques. Faye and Colman will also present an introduction into their own labels, backgrounds and discuss the use of these techniques in their designs.

Using these new origami inspired skills, participants will be guided through transforming a plain bodice/dress shape into various intricate finished design pieces. Each participant will gain familiarity in a number of cut and sew methods as well as several different pattern-drafting approaches, which will be mastered on the day. These new learned skills can then be brought back into your own studio practice.

The workshop cost of €25 will cover drafting paper, fabrics and a toiled bodice. Please bring a pattern master/ruler and a domestic sewing machine if possible.
